The already perilous humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has worsened considerably, with the Israeli army declaring roads leading to aid distribution centers “combat zones.” This alarming development coincides with the temporary closure of facilities operated by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) following a series of deadly incidents. The move effectively chokes off crucial lifelines for a population teetering on the brink of starvation.
The GHF’s suspension of operations was prompted by recent tragedies, including the killing of 27 people in southern Gaza on Tuesday when Israeli troops opened fire near a GHF aid site. This incident, currently under investigation by the Israeli military, is one of several that highlight the extreme dangers faced by Gazans simply attempting to access food. The repeated targeting of aid seekers has drawn fierce international condemnation.
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher condemned these “horrifying scenes,” asserting that the deaths of Gazans seeking food aid are a direct result of “deliberate choices that have systematically deprived” them of essential survival items. He lamented that “no-one should have to risk their life to feed their children,” emphasizing the systemic nature of the crisis rather than isolated incidents.
Fletcher joined calls for immediate independent investigations into these events and demanded accountability for perpetrators. He further urged for the opening of all crossings into Gaza, the lifting of restrictions on aid, and the implementation of a ceasefire, stressing the UN’s capacity and readiness to deliver life-saving assistance at scale to the besieged territory.
