“Unnatural and Stressful”: Why You Must Stop Sleeping on Your Stomach

A spine alignment specialist has issued a strong warning against one of the most common sleeping positions: stomach sleeping. He described the position as “unnatural and stressful” for the human spine, urging those who favor it to make a change. The expert explained that sleep is a critical period of recovery, but this particular posture actively strains the body rather than repairing it.
The specialist detailed the primary problem, which is the position of the neck. When you lie on your stomach, you are forced to twist your head to one side to breathe. Holding this “extended period” of rotation, night after night, places an immense strain on the neck muscles. More seriously, it can compress the nerves that run down the cervical spine, leading to symptoms like neck stiffness, pain, and even tingling or numbness in the arms.
The issues with stomach sleeping are not confined to the neck. The expert elaborated that this position also causes the lower back to arch excessively. This “unnatural direction” puts undue stress on the lumbar region, and many people who favor this position eventually develop chronic lower back pain and stiffness as a direct result. The spine is simply not designed to be held in this hyperextended state for hours.
While stomach sleeping was the first position flagged, the expert also warned against the tight fetal position. He noted that while “cozy,” this pose “rounds the spine too much.” This can over-stretch the back muscles, tighten the hip flexors, and restrict deep breathing, leading to its own set of problems, like mid-back pain.
The best way to sleep, the specialist concluded, is to maintain the spine’s natural curve. He recommends lying on your back with a small pillow under your knees to support the lower back, or on your side with a supportive pillow between your legs to align the hips. These positions distribute weight evenly, prevent strain, and allow you to wake up refreshed.
