A critical deadline is looming in the US-China trade war, as a 90-day truce is set to expire on November 10. This comes as President Donald Trump has made the surprising admission that his tariff policy is “not sustainable.”
The truce has been the only thing holding back a full-scale trade war, which has seen import taxes on Chinese goods threaten to reach 145% and has stoked fears of a global economic slowdown.
To find a path forward, Trump confirmed he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in two weeks, just before the deadline. “I think we’re going to be fine with China,” he said, “but we have to have a fair deal.”
In a recent interview, Trump was candid about the tariffs. “It’s not sustainable,” he said, before immediately shifting blame: “But… they forced me to do that.”
This sets up a high-stakes negotiation. Trump remains wary, noting “China is always looking for an edge,” but also defended the tariffs as necessary leverage, stating that without them, the US “would be exposed as being nothing.”
