For the Sake of Peace? US Justifies Russia Talks as India Tariffs Bite

The White House is framing its controversial energy talks with Russia as a necessary, pragmatic step toward achieving peace in Ukraine. This justification is being offered as India begins to feel the bite of the full 50% tariffs imposed by the US for its own Russian oil trade.
The tariffs, which became fully effective on Wednesday, represent the “stick” in the US foreign policy arsenal, punishing India for not aligning with Washington’s stance on Russia. This move has been criticized for being overly harsh on a strategic partner.
The “carrot” is the potential for renewed economic partnership with Russia. By discussing a return for Exxon Mobil and other energy deals, the US is attempting to create a powerful incentive for Moscow to negotiate an end to the conflict. US envoy Steve Witkoff’s meetings with President Putin were central to advancing this track.
This two-pronged strategy, however, has been labeled hypocritical. While the administration argues its actions are for the greater good of securing peace, critics point out that it involves penalizing an ally for the very type of economic engagement the US is now pursuing for its own strategic and corporate benefit.
