LeBron James continues to defy the aging curve, officially setting himself up to play a record 23rd NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The superstar forward exercised his $52.6 million player option, cementing his return for the 2025-26 campaign and further extending his remarkable career longevity.
According to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, James’s decision is rooted in his competitive drive and desire to win another championship. Paul indicated that while James understands the Lakers’ long-term strategic goals, his immediate priority is to be on a team with a “realistic chance of winning it all.” This ambition remains undimmed despite his advanced age for an NBA player.
The Lakers organization and James share a deep understanding, built over eight years. Paul highlighted their appreciation for the partnership, noting that the Lakers are supportive of James’s goal to make “every season he has left count.” This mutual respect is crucial as they navigate the complexities of building a contender around a veteran superstar.
Even at 40 years old (turning 41 in December), James’s performance is still among the league’s best. Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists in 70 games. As the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and a four-time champion, James continues to build on a legacy that began with his draft in 2003.
