With peace talks hanging by a thread, President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum to Iran on Thursday, declaring that the country must get serious about negotiations before it is “too late.” Trump claimed that Iranian representatives were contradicting their public messaging by privately seeking an agreement from a position of weakness. His remarks, posted on Truth Social, were among his most direct warnings yet to Tehran.

The US has put forward a detailed ceasefire proposal that addresses some of the most contentious issues in the conflict. Key elements include the easing of economic sanctions on Iran, scaling back its nuclear programme, reducing its missile arsenal, and restoring open passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has rejected this plan, while Trump has consistently maintained that a deal is close to being finalized.

Tehran has responded to the US proposal with conditions of its own, including protection for its officials from assassination or targeted strikes, legal guarantees against future wars, compensation for damage suffered during the conflict, and formal international recognition of Iranian authority over the Strait of Hormuz. These demands have been publicly stated through Iranian state media. Neither side has signaled a willingness to fully accept the other’s terms.

The humanitarian impact of the conflict has been enormous. More than 1,500 Iranians have been killed, as have nearly 1,100 Lebanese nationals, and the death toll in Israel and other parts of the region continues to climb. Thirteen American military personnel have been killed, and millions of people across Iran and Lebanon have been uprooted from their homes.

Trump’s message Thursday underscored a growing sense of impatience in Washington. The continuation of air raids and missile strikes despite ongoing diplomatic contacts suggests that a resolution is far from guaranteed. Iran’s next move will be watched carefully by governments and analysts across the world.
