During a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to the Nordic countries, leaders from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway have collectively urged China to leverage its influence in bringing an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. In Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of China supporting efforts for a ceasefire and facilitating peace talks, while voicing concerns over China’s ongoing economic ties with Russia, particularly through energy purchases.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated that the Nordic countries have together encouraged China to press Russia to engage in negotiations without setting preconditions. The call for diplomatic intervention highlights the region’s desire for China to play a more active role in resolving the conflict.
The discussions during Wang Yi’s visit also touched on various other significant issues. Trade, climate cooperation, renewable energy, and Arctic affairs were key topics on the agenda. Norwegian leaders underscored the importance of collaboration with China on matters of mutual interest but did not shy away from addressing critical issues such as national security, cybersecurity, and human rights concerns in regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong. Additionally, China’s increasing activities in the Arctic were noted with a degree of apprehension.
Wang Yi’s five-day tour of the Nordic region serves as a testament to China’s growing engagement with these countries amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. The visit reflects China’s interest in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties while navigating the delicate balance of international diplomacy shaped by current global tensions.
