The Netherlands is bracing for its most intense heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to soar to between 37°C and 38°C in the southern areas by midweek. Meteorologists are cautioning that these conditions might challenge some of the highest June temperatures historically recorded in the country. The Dutch weather service has noted that hot air advancing from southern Europe is likely to push temperatures across much of the nation into the 32°C to 38°C range starting Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday potentially experiencing even more extreme heat.

Currently, the Netherlands has not officially declared a national heatwave, which is characterized by at least five consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 25°C, including three days above 30°C. However, this threshold could be met as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. Some areas in the southeast have already witnessed a regional heatwave. The country’s highest recorded June temperature is 38.4°C, recorded in Maastricht on June 27, 1947. Forecasters warn that this record might be threatened if the current weather predictions hold true.

This heatwave in the Netherlands is part of a larger pattern of extreme temperatures sweeping across Europe. France experienced temperatures as high as 41°C over the weekend and has issued its highest weather alerts. Similarly, regions in Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom are dealing with unusually high temperatures for June. Climate scientists attribute the growing frequency and intensity of such heatwaves to the ongoing effects of global warming. Experts point out that heatwaves that used to occur approximately once a decade are now happening about every three years, with significantly higher temperatures.

The surge in temperatures follows a weekend of severe storms in the Netherlands, which reportedly resulted in one fatality. In anticipation of the rising heat, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has announced a nationwide heat warning, set to take effect on Thursday. This warning comes as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and awareness as the country faces the looming heatwave.
