Magdalena Andersson, leader of Sweden’s Social Democratic Party, has halted her efforts to form a new government, as the current parliamentary conditions do not support her becoming prime minister. This decision comes after the Left Party chose to back the Moderate Party’s candidate for Speaker of the Riksdag over the Social Democrats’ nominee, altering the political dynamics within the Swedish parliament.
Andersson plans to return the responsibility of government formation to the newly appointed Speaker. She indicated that the task could potentially fall to Ulf Kristersson of the Moderate Party, Nooshi Dadgostar of the Left Party, or another leader representing the new parliamentary alignment.
The Left Party has clarified that its support for the Moderate candidate is not indicative of a partnership but stems from a belief that the current Speaker’s experience is advantageous for the government formation process. Despite this, the Left Party continues to view Andersson as its preferred choice for prime minister, although it has expressed a desire to be included in future government negotiations, a point of contention as it was excluded from talks with the Social Democrats, Greens, and Centre Party.
Andersson emphasized the connection between the Speaker election and the government formation process, noting that while she has not dismissed the possibility of a future bid for prime minister, the present conditions are not favorable for such an attempt.
