The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s significant electoral gains in Saxony-Anhalt have prompted Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten to call it a “wake-up call” for German politics. Despite acknowledging the voters’ democratic right to choose, Jetten expressed concern over the AfD’s extreme views and its alleged pro-Russian stance. He urged German leaders to reflect on the reasons behind the AfD’s surge in support and to address the electorate’s concerns more effectively.
In the recent election, the AfD captured 43.8 percent of the vote, narrowly missing an outright majority. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) came in second with 17.2 percent, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) garnered 9.3 percent. The Greens and Die Linke followed with 8.9 percent and 8.6 percent, respectively. Additionally, the BSW party entered the state parliament after achieving 5.3 percent of the vote. This outcome has raised alarms among European political leaders, with officials from France and Poland highlighting the growing challenge of far-right movements. Conversely, former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomed the result, offering his congratulations to the AfD.
German authorities have expressed concerns about potential threats to democratic values and the increasing influence of Russian narratives within the country. Reports of misinformation and foreign interference during the election campaign have further fueled discussions about the factors contributing to the AfD’s rising popularity. The party, led by co-leader Alice Weidel, aims to build on this momentum, setting an ambitious goal of securing at least 40 percent of the vote in the next federal election to become Germany’s largest party.
Despite its electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD lacks enough seats to govern independently, as several parties have refused to collaborate with them due to their controversial positions on issues like migration. This reluctance to form alliances has cast uncertainty over the establishment of a stable state government.
