AI-Created Posts Put Dutch PM Rob Jetten Under Intense Scrutiny

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his D66 party have come under scrutiny for utilizing artificial intelligence to generate a substantial number of social media posts, some addressing sensitive political topics. This practice has sparked concerns over the authenticity and trustworthiness of the communications shared on these platforms. A thorough examination of 1,812 posts made on Jetten’s and D66’s accounts across X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn since 2021 revealed that at least 232 posts were crafted using AI chatbots. Specifically, 68 of these originated from Jetten’s personal accounts, while 164 were from the party’s channels.

The reliance on AI for social media content reportedly surged after the collapse of the Schoof I Cabinet in June 2025, with approximately 30% of posts from Jetten and D66 identified as AI-generated thereafter. This technology was not only used for social media but also contributed to parts of Jetten’s book “Hoe het wél kan” and certain lines in three D66 campaign videos. The involvement of AI in posts concerning delicate issues such as the war in Ukraine, the MH17 disaster commemoration, and the government’s apology to the Moluccan community has amplified public scrutiny.

While D66 has acknowledged the use of AI, the party insists that all AI-generated content undergoes review and refinement by their staff. They further stated that posts on Jetten’s personal accounts are initially based on his input and receive his approval or edits before publication. This has, however, led to questions among experts about the potential impact on Jetten’s credibility. Claes de Vreese, a professor at the University of Amsterdam, cautioned that AI-generated language might blur the line between a politician’s genuine expressions and automated messaging.

The controversy highlights broader issues surrounding transparency and the incorporation of AI in political communications. It raises essential questions about the expectations placed on official social media accounts to genuinely reflect the personal views and words of elected officials. As AI technology becomes more integrated into political strategies, the need for clear guidelines and transparency becomes increasingly critical to maintain public trust and the authenticity of political discourse.
