Elon Musk has introduced a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2, incorporating rocket-thruster technology developed by SpaceX, his aerospace company. The unveiling took place during a demonstration in Texas, where the electric sports car was shown executing aerial manoeuvres using thrusters after driving up a curved ramp. This highlighted Musk’s vision of the vehicle as a potential flying car, capable of performing rolls and other complex movements with the aid of altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters.
The demonstration was conducted remotely to mitigate safety risks, and Musk noted that the vehicle might face legal challenges in various jurisdictions. The Tesla Roadster 2 is slated to begin production in 2028, with an expected price tag exceeding $200,000. Tesla has announced plans for different versions of the vehicle, including a performance model and a specialised variant equipped with a thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version featuring a full flight system is proposed to be available by invitation only.
Tesla has cautioned that the flying capabilities of the Roadster 2 are not intended for use on public roads. The prototype’s demonstration underscores Musk’s ambition to merge electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion. However, practical application, safety requirements, and regulatory approval remain significant hurdles to overcome.
